Skye, Moidart, Mull

Armadale ferry port

Armadale Ferry   The full breakfast at Tigh na Croisean included black pudding, which Dad was not happy to have on his plate. I thought it was pretty good, but I like haggis better. Then we headed to Armadale, to catch the ferry from Skye to the "mainland." There was a terrible piper at the ferry - we though at first it was just that his pipes were cold and he only needed to warm up, but he never got any more in tune, and he played all the tunes faster than he could handle them. (This was the second piper we saw - both were not good.) The ferry crosses to Mallaig, which is a quaint little port town, where we had lunch at Mallaig Corner.

Prince Charlie Monument   goats in Moidart

We had not driven the roads on the Morar or Moidart regions before, and we found the scenery quite beautiful. Parts of this area were so green and moss-covered that it looked almost like jungle. Much of this road is single-track, and most of the folks we met didn't seem to understand how to handle those roads, unlike the people on Lewis and Skye. Perhaps they were all tourists. We also found that this area was inhabited by kamikaze sheep. They would dash out in front of cars with no warning. We watched one jump in front of a car and somehow manage to survive.

We stopped at the Prince Charlie Monument and a beech tree memorial for the Seven Men of Moidart, but it appeared there were only five men left. After crossing the Morvern peninsula, we took the very short ferry across from Lochaline to Fishnish, Mull.

Chaffinch at Mull tea shop   tea room birds

We found a tea shop just beyond the port at Fishnish, and stopped for a snack (more millionaire shortbread.) They had a wonderful bird feeder there where I got more great shots of the local backyard birds. Then we headed North to visit the town of Tobermory. We stayed in Harbour House Guest House right on the water, and walked up and down the streets of the town. We ate dinner at an Indian restaurant (Balti Sargeet?) where we had wonderful food. After dinner, Wayne and Jo walked up and down main street, past the waterfalls, and out on the pier. It was a beautiful night for a walk.
