Iona, Mull, Oban

sunrise on Iona

I was having trouble sleeping due to my cough, so I got up very early this morning and took a walk at sunrise. It was beautiful watching the sun come up, and watching the lambs playing. I saw a song thrush and very few people.

After another continental breakfast, we went to the nunnery before catching the ferry. The nunnery was not only an interesting ruin, but it was planted with a beautiful garden. We misjudged the timing of the ferry, and ended up waiting for about an hour at the pier. This proved interesting because we met up with Susie, a BBC TV producer from Glasgow whom we'd met on the Staffa boat trip, and again at the evening abbey service.

When we did catch the ferry to Mull, we returned to the same tea shop in Bunessan for lunch, and then headed North to Duart castle. Duart was used for exterior shots of Sean Connery's character's estate in the movie Entrapment. We took the tour, which had very nice displays about a dive for a Spanish galleon wreck right off the coast, and interesting information about life in the castle. There was a MacLean serving as docent at the castle, who talked to us for a while about the history, and kept Mom entertained while the rest of us went out on the top of the castle. There were terrific views from the castle, and as the rain was just clearing, we saw yet another rainbow. (The trip was full of them.)

We left just in time to catch the ferry to Oban, where we drove up to the top of Pulpit Hill to see the views and to see if we could stay at the Ardenlee B&B where we'd stayed on a previous trip. From there we went in search of good salmon for dinner, and ended up at an excellent restaurant called The Studio.
