We had left the last couple of days of our trip unplanned, and decided the night before to stay in Oban a second night, and make a day-trip down from there to Kilmartin Glen to see the prehistoric sites. It proved to be a very rainy day, the only day we had the entire trip where it rained pretty much non-stop all day, and rained very hard for parts of the day. We went anyway, and had a wet but wonderful time.

We started at the Kilmartin Museum, where we stayed dry as we read about the long history of the location and tried our hands at making rubbings and playing "rock" music. The tea room at the museum was full, so we made our way across the street to the Argyle Hotel, where we had an excellent lunch. From there we visited the Kilmartin church, where there are several ancient crosses and many old graveslabs. Then we headed to Carnasserie Castle, but we thought the walk too long and muddy to attempt, and time was short, so we headed on to see the stones. We visited the Ballymeanoch stones and kerb cairn, the Dunadd hill fort, the Achnabreck carved stones, the Kilmichael carved stones, Temple Woods stone circle, and the Nether Largie south. These were all amazing sights, and well worth the trouble and the wet. We would have seen more, but parts of the area were on farms where lambing was going on, and they were closed to the public. |
We ended the day with another stop at the Argyle Hotel in Kilmartin, for dinner and wonderful desserts.
